The event has been held in Austin on the campus of The University of Texas since its inception. Location History The state tournament has been held in two locations during its history. Individual, relay teams, and divers score points in 12 events that are accumulated towards a final team total to determine a team state champion. Team scoring at state meet is: for the finals and for the consolation finals, relays earn double points. The last eight finishers in the preliminary heats do not advance to the finals. The top eight finishers qualify for the finals heat, finishers 9-16 qualify for the consolation finals. At the state meet, each event consists of three preliminary heats. The current structure started in 2017 with the first and second place finishers, along with the next best eight times qualifying for the state meet (Note: There are 24 total participants/relay teams at the state meet per event, including diving). The top eight finishers qualified for the finals heat, and the bottom eight finishers qualified for the consolation finals. At the state meet, each event consisted of two preliminary heats. The top finisher from each regional meet and the next best eight times qualified for the state meet. From 1970 until 2016, the top six finishers and relays qualified from district to regionals. Swimming and diving has eight regions, as opposed to the four regions used in most sports. With the addition of Conference 6A to the UIL in 2015, both conferences were elevated one level. The event started in Arlington on the campus of The University of Texas-Arlington at the College Park Center, then moved in 2017 to its current location at the Fort Worth Convention Center. (Note: Preliminary scores do not carry over to finals.) Location History The state championship has been held in two locations during its history. Teams compete in the three categories again to determine final placing. Scores from those three categories are combined and the top 20 schools from the preliminary round advance to the finals. Teams compete in three categories: Band Chant, Crowd Leading and Fight Song. From, the Spirit State s were deemed a pilot contest. The 2019 State s were the first to be recognized as sanctioned UIL contests and count towards Lone Star Cup point totals. In 2018, Conferences and 6A were broken up into two divisions and the two Co-Ed divisions were combined (Note: Co-Ed division teams require four or more males within the squad). 2 spirit INTRODUCTION q First year of UIL competition: State Structure In 2016, championships were awarded to Conferences -6A, as well as Large and Small Co-Ed.
